Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this mentoring for?
Mentoring is for young people (typically aged 12–18) who would benefit from a calm, supportive space outside school or home. Some students are going through a tough time, others just need space to talk, reflect, or grow in confidence. It’s suitable for teens who are creative, curious, anxious, withdrawn, or just looking for a safe place to be themselves.
Is this the same as therapy?
No — mentoring is not a replacement for therapy or mental health treatment. My sessions are supportive, creative, and purposeful, but not clinical or diagnostic. If a young person is experiencing acute distress or complex mental health needs, I may recommend that you also seek therapeutic input.
What happens in a session?
Sessions are tailored to the individual. We might talk, make something, reflect, explore emotions or challenges, set goals, or simply think things through together. Some teens love using creative materials, others prefer quiet conversation — I adapt to what works best.
Do parents stay in the session?
No, sessions are one-to-one. However, I do offer an initial parent meeting and a brief check-in (by phone or email) every few sessions if helpful. I encourage open communication and will always let you know if I have concerns or feel extra support is needed.
Is everything confidential?
Yes, with the exception of safeguarding concerns. I will always explain the limits of confidentiality to the young person at the start. If I believe they or someone else is at risk of harm, I will follow safeguarding procedures and involve you as needed.
Where do in-person sessions take place?
In-person sessions are held in a quiet space 7 miles to the south of Cambridge designed to feel safe, welcoming, and relaxed. Online sessions are offered via Zoom.
